The subject of whether there is a “One Anointed and Appointed” over the Sealing Keys of Elijah is controversial and hotly debated among some sects of Mormonism — as it ultimately related to who has sealing authority — and does sealing authority necessarily need to be organized? The purpose of this issue of One Eternal Round is to bring further historical light to the matter, documenting what was taught and understood in early Mormonism on the subject.

Even though I had hoped to fully cover the pre-Utah period in the previous issue of One Eternal Round, half of this issue will be providing additional historical evidence about the doctrine of the One Anointed and Appointed as it was understood by the apostles after Joseph Smith’s death in the period of 1844 to 1847.

The second half of this paper will explore the history of temple ordinances and their authorization in early Utah during the lifetimes of Brigham Young and John Taylor, and how marriage sealings and other ordinances were practiced and regulated.
