The subject of patriarchal rights in the context of the post-1844 Mormon Succession Crisis is one that fascinates and has been a n interest for researchers over the years. A variety of sources in the LDS Church, the RLDS movement, and smaller branches of Mormonism provide fertile ground for study and research.

Indeed, this subject not only comes up in the RLDS Church sources, but also in Utah Mormonism among both believers as well as those disaffected from the movement. Smaller groups such as Lyman Wight and his followers, and James Strang and his followers, also provide insight into the different perspectives on this succession issue.

The question the researcher and historian becomes: did Joseph Smith expect one of his sons to be his successor? If so, which son was appointed, or were several sons designated? Did Joseph Smith III receive a special blessing or ordination to succeed his father? These are among many questions that will be explored and addressed in this issue of One Eternal Round.
