One hotly contested topic in discussing various claims to authority in Mormonism is the belief in there being an individual that is the “One Anointed and Appointed” over the Sealing Keys of Elijah. Those who believe in the existence and legitimacy of this office believe the One Anointed and Appointed is the one man who is to preside over and direct the administration of temple ordinances that Joseph Smith revealed during the Nauvoo period, and that temple work needs to be done in union with him, or with his blessing.

Many see this office referenced in the July 12, 1843 revelation on celestial marriage (known to Latter-day Saints today as D&C 132). However, some believe that this understanding may have been a later innovation under Brigham Young or later.

The purpose of this paper is to document sources, statements, and events besides D&C 132 in Nauvoo that also appear to be evidence for the existence of this office, both before and after Joseph Smith’s death. D&C 132 will also be laid out in its full historical context. Joseph Smith’s teachings regarding the presiding office over the Holy Order and Council of Fifty will be explored.

Finally, whether or not the office of the One Anointed and Appointed was intrinsically tied to the office of President of the Church, or whether it was a distinct office, will be discussed.
