At the October 1840 General Conference Joseph Smith taught that animal sacrifice was an ordinance that would eventually be restored. While some commentators have noted that a number of statements exist from early Latter-day Saints about sacrifice being eventually restored, and some further pointing to prophecies in scripture about such a latter-day restoration, the actual theology for sacrifice being restored has not been explored in-depth. How would restoring animal sacrifice fit with the Atonement of Jesus Christ? What types of animal sacrifices would be performed?
The purpose of this issue of One Eternal Round is to explore these questions. In doing so, an in-depth study of scriptural prophecy and the Atonement of Jesus Christ is in order, contrasting different models of the Atonement, as well as different proposed mechanisms for how the Atonement works. Additionally, this paper will explore other pre-Mosaic ordinances that are also prophesied to be restored, such as circumcision. A number of apparent contradictions from other scriptures to these prophecies will also be discussed.
