The first three Presidents of the LDS Church received a special ordination to be a ‘King over Israel’ — the presiding King and Priest, or “Prophet, Priest and King” over the House of Israel and the new priesthood order of Kings and Priests and Queens and Priestesses introduced in Nauvoo.
From the sources, this offices appears to have been intricately connected to the new priesthood organizations that were introduced in Nauvoo, namely the Holy Order and Council of Fifty.
This paper will explore the historical background and context of this ordinance, as well as the details that are available about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and John Taylor’s coronations, including a never before published revelation to President John Taylor to be anointed to this office, as well as George Q. Cannon’s copy of the revelation and record of the ceremony he recorded in his journal.
In uncovering the sources to document this ordinance, another lost aspect of Mormon theology will also be unearthed — the idea that it was intended for there to be a Queen over the Kingdom as well, to administer and rule alongside the King of the Kingdom, as well as some pieces of the historical puzzle that may explain why this office was lost and forgotten.
