Utah Mormonism today holds a very high view of the Apostleship — that it is the highest priesthood and that the way the highest keys and authority of the priesthood are conferred upon a person is by ordaining them an Apostle. But is this what Joseph Smith taught?

This paper was written as a historical study of what was taught by Joseph Smith during his lifetime about the authority and jurisdiction of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. It also is to explore, compare, and contrast what Joseph Smith taught about priesthood orders and hierarchy to what was taught after his death.

Additionally, this paper explores the office of the Seventy and what was originally taught about this office, comparing what Joseph Smith taught about the seventies to what was taught by others after the Prophet’s death.

In studying the history of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Apostleship, and the office of the Seventy, a picture emerges of these offices and quorums’ authority being magnified and exalted after the Prophet Joseph Smith’s death, to bolster Apostolic Succession in the aftermath of the Succession Crisis.
