For over a century black members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints could only receive the ordinances of baptism and the laying on of hands to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. They were barred from holding the priesthood or receiving any temple blessings except being permitted to participate in baptisms for the dead. Many modern Latter-day Saints find these restrictions puzzling and controversial, or even potentially contrary to and contradicted by scripture.

But can strong arguments against the Priesthood Ban be made from the scriptures? Or can scriptural arguments be made to support the ban? This paper will explore theological arguments against the ban from the scriptures as well as counterarguments to them.
